Halloween Didn't Go as Planned: When Life Reminds Us to Adjust, Protect Our Peace, and Give Grace
Halloween Didn't Go as Planned: When Life Reminds Us to Adjust, Protect Our Peace, and Give Grace
By Angel, Founder of AMC Rise and Thrive
Hey beautiful souls! 🤍🎃
Welcome back to AMC Rise and Thrive, where we make room for
the beautiful, complicated, unexpected, and sometimes downright unpredictable
moments that make up this journey called life.
Happy Halloween! I hope everyone is having a safe, enjoyable
holiday filled with laughter, good memories, and maybe a little too much candy.
🍬
Well, I had plans for today. Actual plans. I had been looking
forward to Halloween and had already started thinking about how everything was
going to come together. I even stayed up late doing my nails because I had a
whole costume concept in mind.
My costume was going to be a mom who had her stuff together.
You know the look: dressed nicely, nails done, hair done, looking like she had
somehow managed to organize every corner of her life. 😂
I had the vision!
But apparently, life had other plans.
My son came home last night with a pretty nasty cough, and as
the evening progressed, it only seemed to get worse. This is a child who is
normally full of energy, constantly moving, and rarely interested in sitting
still for very long. So, when he spent the morning and most of the afternoon in
bed, I knew he wasn't feeling like himself.
Poor thing didn't have much of an appetite either. Thankfully,
he didn't have a fever, but between the coughing and what seems like sinus
drainage irritating his throat, he clearly needed some rest.
And just like that, our Halloween plans changed.
I made the decision to cancel our plans because I didn't think
it was right to potentially expose other people to whatever he might have
picked up. Trick-or-treating involves being around so many children and
families. The last thing I wanted was to unknowingly spread germs and possibly
disrupt someone else's plans.
So, we stayed home.
Now, I'm not going to pretend I wasn't disappointed. I had
been looking forward to the evening, and I had already put a little effort into
preparing. But sometimes being a parent means recognizing when the plan needs
to change, even when you really wanted things to go differently.
And honestly, that's what I want to explore today.
Because life has a way of reminding us that having a plan and
being able to follow through with it are two very different things.
Sometimes the day doesn't unfold the way we imagined.
Sometimes the people we love need something different from us. And sometimes,
the best thing we can do is stop trying to force the original plan and work
with what life has placed in front of us.
When the Plans Change, We Have to Learn to Adjust
I think one of the more interesting things about life is how
quickly things can change.
We can spend days, weeks, or even months looking forward to
something. We make arrangements, prepare what we need, coordinate schedules,
and mentally picture how everything will unfold.
Then something unexpected happens.
A child gets sick. Someone has an emergency. The weather
changes. An opportunity falls through. Something we thought was certain
suddenly becomes uncertain.
And now we're left figuring out what comes next.
Halloween was supposed to be a fun evening for us. I had
already thought about what I was going to wear and had taken the time to get a
few things ready. I was looking forward to enjoying the holiday and making
memories.
But my son's health became the priority.
And while I would have loved for everything to go as planned,
I had to recognize that our circumstances had changed.
That's something we don't always give ourselves enough room to
do.
We can become so attached to what we expected that we struggle
to accept what is actually happening. Sometimes we spend more energy being
frustrated about the change than figuring out how to move forward.
But flexibility is an important part of living.
It doesn't mean we stop making plans or looking forward to
things. It means we understand that our plans are not guarantees.
There is a difference between being intentional about how we
want our lives to unfold and believing that everything must happen according to
our expectations.
One leaves room for possibilities. The other can leave us
frustrated when reality doesn't cooperate.
I've learned that sometimes the healthiest response is simply
to acknowledge the disappointment and adjust.
We don't have to pretend we're happy about every change. We
don't have to convince ourselves that missing something we were excited about
doesn't matter.
We can be disappointed and still make the right decision.
We can wish things had turned out differently while accepting
that the circumstances require something else.
And we can find another way to enjoy the moment.
Maybe Halloween doesn't look like trick-or-treating this year.
Maybe it looks like staying home, checking on a sick child, watching a movie,
and enjoying a quieter evening.
It may not be the experience we originally imagined, but that
doesn't mean the day has lost all its value.
Sometimes the memories we make unexpectedly become just as
meaningful as the ones we planned.
And that brings me to something else: learning to recognize
when changing our plans isn't simply convenient, but necessary.
Sometimes Love Means Choosing What's Best for
Everyone
One thing motherhood has taught me is that our decisions don't
always affect just us.
There are times when we have to consider the bigger picture,
even when it means giving up something we were looking forward to.
That was the situation today.
My son wasn't feeling well, and while I couldn't say with
certainty what was causing his symptoms, I knew he wasn't at his best. His
cough had gotten worse, he wasn't eating much, and he had spent most of the day
resting.
Could we have gone out anyway? Technically, we could have.
But should we?
That was the more important question.
Halloween brings together children, parents, grandparents,
neighbors, and entire communities. Families make plans to visit houses, attend
events, and spend time together.
The last thing I wanted was to take a chance on exposing
others to whatever my son might have.
And I think that's something worth remembering beyond
Halloween.
Sometimes consideration for other people means making
decisions that inconvenience us.
It means staying home when we're sick, rescheduling when
necessary, communicating when we can't follow through, and recognizing that our
choices can affect people we may never even realize we're impacting.
We live in a world where everyone has something going on.
People are managing responsibilities, protecting their families, caring for
loved ones, and trying to maintain some sense of normalcy.
A little consideration can go a long way.
And while we cannot control every germ, every exposure, or
every circumstance, we can make thoughtful decisions when we recognize that
something might put others at risk.
For me, that was enough reason to change our plans.
Now, there is also a personal side to this.
When our children aren't feeling well, especially when they're
used to being active and independent, we often see a completely different side
of them.
My son becomes much more needy and clingy when he doesn't feel
good.
And if you have a child who wants to be close to you every
minute when they're sick, you already know what that means.
Mama is on duty!
The cuddles may be sweet, but they also come with very little
personal space. And if he's constantly close to me, I already know there's a
possibility I'll end up catching whatever he has.
I had my own issues a couple of weeks ago, and I initially
wondered whether he might have picked something up from me. But given the
timing, it seems more likely that he's dealing with something else.
Either way, it's one of those situations where we do what we
can, take reasonable precautions, and hope everyone gets through it without
passing anything around.
Motherhood has a way of reminding us that love isn't always
expressed through the big, memorable moments.
Sometimes love looks like canceling plans.
Sometimes it looks like checking temperatures, encouraging
someone to drink fluids, finding something they might actually want to eat, and
sitting beside them when they don't feel well.
And sometimes it means accepting that the evening you planned
for yourself is going to look very different.
But those moments count, too.
They may not come with photographs, costumes, or exciting
stories to share, but they are still part of the life we're building with the
people we love.
Finding Grace When the Day Doesn't Go as Expected
Now, let's talk about the part that I think applies to so many
areas of life.
How do we handle it when things don't go the way we expected?
Because Halloween is just one example.
We experience this with vacations, birthdays, holidays, family
gatherings, work responsibilities, relationships, and even personal goals.
We have an idea of how something should happen, and when it
doesn't, we can find ourselves struggling to adjust.
Sometimes we become frustrated because we feel like we're
constantly having to accommodate circumstances beyond our control.
And if we're already tired, overwhelmed, or carrying a lot of
responsibility, one more unexpected change can feel like the final straw.
But I've come to appreciate the importance of giving ourselves
grace in those moments.
Grace allows us to acknowledge that things didn't work out
without making the situation worse by criticizing ourselves for it.
It reminds us that changing direction isn't necessarily a
failure.
Sometimes it's simply wisdom.
Think about how often we judge ourselves for not following
through with something.
We cancel an outing and feel guilty. We postpone a project and
feel behind. We change our minds and wonder whether we're being inconsistent.
But what if the adjustment is exactly what the moment
requires?
What if staying home is the responsible choice?
What if taking a break is what allows us to show up better
tomorrow?
What if the detour is not something we need to fight against
but something we need to navigate?
There's a difference between giving up and recognizing that
circumstances have changed.
We can still look forward to another opportunity. We can still
celebrate later. We can still find joy in the little things that remain
available to us.
And we don't have to turn every unexpected situation into a
spiritual lesson before we're allowed to feel what we're feeling.
Sometimes we're simply disappointed.
Sometimes we're tired.
Sometimes we just wanted our nails to look good and our
costume to come together! 😂
And that's okay, too.
Faith doesn't require us to pretend that every inconvenience
is wonderful.
It invites us to trust God even when we don't understand how
the day is unfolding.
I think there's something beautiful about learning to meet
life where it is instead of constantly wishing it were somewhere else.
Today, my reality is a sick little boy, canceled plans, and a
Halloween evening that looks nothing like what I envisioned.
Tomorrow may bring something different.
And that's the thing about life: we don't always know what the
next day will ask of us.
We can prepare, plan, and do our best, but we also have to
remain willing to adjust.
So if your plans have changed recently, give yourself
permission to breathe.
If you've had to disappoint someone because circumstances
required a different decision, remember that not every change is a reflection
of your commitment.
If you're caring for someone who needs more of you than usual,
acknowledge the energy that requires.
And if you're feeling disappointed because something you were
looking forward to didn't happen, allow yourself to feel that without letting
it overshadow everything else.
There will be other opportunities.
There will be other celebrations.
There will be other moments to dress up, make memories, and
enjoy the things you've been looking forward to.
For now, we can work with what we have.
We can appreciate what is going well.
We can take care of ourselves and the people who depend on us.
And we can trust that one unexpected evening doesn't determine
the beauty of the entire journey.
Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is adjust our
expectations without abandoning our joy.

Affirmations for When Life Changes the Plans
Sometimes we need a gentle reminder that we are allowed to
change direction without feeling like we've failed.
Take a moment to breathe and reflect on these affirmations:
✨ I give
myself permission to adjust when life requires something different.
✨ I can
experience disappointment without losing my gratitude.
✨ I choose
compassion for myself and consideration for others.
✨ I
release the need to control every detail and remain open to God's guidance.
✨ I trust
that joy can still find me, even when the day unfolds differently than
expected.
Carry these reminders with you. You don't have to have
everything figured out to move through life with grace.
📖 Bible
Verse of the Day
Proverbs 16:9 (KJV)
“A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD
directeth his steps.”
I love this verse because it reminds us that making plans is
part of being human, but we must also recognize that we aren't in control of
every circumstance.
We can decide where we want to go, what we want to accomplish,
and how we hope things will unfold. We can prepare ourselves and make
thoughtful decisions.
But sometimes the direction of our lives changes.
And when it does, we have an opportunity to trust God in the
middle of the adjustment.
That doesn't mean we sit back and stop making decisions. It
means we remain open to divine direction while doing our part.
Sometimes God's guidance may come through a circumstance that
requires us to slow down. Sometimes wisdom means recognizing that the original
plan no longer makes sense.
And sometimes the next right step is simply staying home and
taking care of the people entrusted to us.
We may not always understand why a particular day unfolds the
way it does, but we can continue moving forward with faith.
Our plans may change, but our ability to trust God doesn't
have to.
🎵 Song of
the Day: “This Is Halloween” — The Citizens of Halloween
Well, we can't have Halloween without a little Halloween
music! 🎃
Today's Song of the Day is “This Is Halloween” by The
Citizens of Halloween, from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
I thought this was a fun choice because, even though our
Halloween plans didn't happen the way I imagined, I didn't want to completely
lose the spirit of the holiday.
The song brings that playful, theatrical Halloween energy that
makes this time of year so recognizable.
And honestly, sometimes we need a little reminder not to take
every unexpected turn too seriously.
Life is going to happen. Plans will change. Things won't
always line up the way we hoped.
But that doesn't mean we have to abandon the joy.
Maybe this Halloween looks different for us. Maybe we'll
celebrate another day when everyone is feeling better.
In the meantime, we can still enjoy the music, appreciate the
little things, and make the best of the evening we have.
So whether you're out enjoying Halloween festivities or
spending a quiet night at home, let yourself enjoy the moment.
After all, there's always another opportunity to make a
memory. 🧡
🤍 Final
Thoughts: Sometimes the Best Plan Is the One That Changes
Beautiful souls, today was a reminder that life doesn't always
follow the schedule we create.
I had my costume planned. I had my nails done. I was ready to
step into my version of a mom who had everything together.
And instead, I found myself at home with a sick little boy who
needed his mama.
Not exactly what I envisioned, but this is life.
Sometimes we get the celebration. Sometimes we get the
unexpected detour. And sometimes we get a little bit of both.
I'm grateful that my son doesn't have a fever, and I'm hopeful
that he'll start feeling better soon. We'll adjust, take care of what needs
attention, and figure out another opportunity to enjoy the things we had
planned.
That's what we do.
We adapt. We make adjustments. We give ourselves grace.
And we remember that not every day has to be extraordinary to
be meaningful.
If your Halloween didn't go as planned, I hope you found a
little joy wherever you were. And if life has recently handed you an unexpected
change, I hope you remember that changing the plan doesn't mean you've lost
your way.
Sometimes the most loving, responsible, and spiritually
aligned decision is the one that looks nothing like what we originally
imagined.
So here's to flexibility, consideration, family, and finding
beauty in the moments we didn't plan.
May we learn to embrace the life happening in front of us
while remaining open to everything God has yet to unfold.
Until next time, keep growing, keep healing, keep trusting,
and remember that even when life changes the plans, there's still room for joy.
With love, light, and gratitude,
Angel 🤍✨
