Time Is a Gift: Why We Should Stop Taking Tomorrow for Granted

Time Is a Gift: Why We Should Stop Taking Tomorrow for Granted

By Angel, Founder of AMC Rise and Thrive

🌅 Welcome, Friend

Come sit with me for a minute.

Seriously. Put down whatever is pulling at your attention, take a breath, and imagine that we're sitting across from each other with a warm cup of coffee between us.

Tonight, I want to talk about something we all have, something we all use, something we often complain about—and something none of us can manufacture more of.

Time.

It is one of the strangest gifts we are given because we don't know exactly how much of it we have.

We know we have right now.

We assume we'll have tomorrow.

We make plans for next week, next month, next year. We buy calendars. We schedule appointments. We make vacation plans. We save money for the future. We tell people, "I'll get to it eventually."

And most of the time, that feels perfectly reasonable.

But there is something humbling about remembering that tomorrow is never actually promised.

The fact that you opened your eyes today matters.

The fact that you took your first breath this morning matters.

The fact that you have another opportunity to laugh, love, apologize, create, learn, pray, forgive, rest, serve, and simply exist matters.

You were given another day.

And that is no small thing.

💛 The Days We Assume Will Always Be There

I think one of the easiest things to do is treat time like it is an unlimited resource.

We spend money carefully because we can see when the bank account gets low.

We watch the gas gauge because we know the car will eventually stop.

We notice when the refrigerator is empty because we can see what is missing.

But time?

There isn't a little gauge on our wrist that says:

You have 4,237 days remaining.

There is no notification that pops up and says, "This is the last Tuesday you will ever experience."

We simply move through our days.

Wake up.

Go to work.

Take care of responsibilities.

Scroll through our phones.

Answer messages.

Clean the house.

Run errands.

Watch television.

Go to sleep.

Then we wake up and do it again.

And somewhere in the middle of all that ordinary living, we can forget that ordinary life is actually the gift.

We wait for the big moments to feel alive.

We wait for the vacation.

The promotion.

The relationship.

The new house.

The weekend.

Retirement.

The "right time."

We tell ourselves we'll slow down later.

We'll call them later.

We'll take the trip later.

We'll pursue that dream later.

We'll spend more time with the people we love later.

But what happens when later doesn't arrive?

That is the uncomfortable question.

And I don't ask it to frighten you.

I ask it because sometimes we need to be reminded of what is already sitting in our hands.

Today.

This breath.

This moment.

This life.

🌱 Why We Forget How Precious Time Is

I don't think most of us intentionally waste our time.

Sometimes we're simply tired.

Sometimes we're overwhelmed.

Sometimes we're surviving circumstances that require every ounce of energy we have.

Sometimes we are carrying responsibilities that nobody else can see.

And sometimes we become so focused on getting through the day that we forget to actually experience it.

There is a difference between surviving a day and living it.

You can accomplish twenty things and still never really be present for your own life.

You can answer every email, wash every dish, finish every task, and still miss the sunset happening outside your window.

You can spend hours thinking about what happened yesterday and worrying about what might happen tomorrow while completely missing the only moment you actually possess.

Right now.

And I understand this because life has a way of pulling us in a thousand different directions.

There are bills to pay.

People who need us.

Responsibilities that don't disappear simply because we're exhausted.

There are disappointments we haven't processed and questions we haven't answered.

Sometimes our minds are so busy trying to prepare for the next problem that we forget to appreciate the absence of a problem in this particular moment.

That's something I've had to learn myself.

Not every moment has to be productive to be valuable.

Not every day has to produce something impressive.

Sometimes the blessing is simply being here.

Sometimes the miracle is an ordinary morning.

Sometimes God's gift isn't a dramatic breakthrough.

Sometimes it is another sunrise. 🌅

🌿 What Loss Teaches Us About Time

Every generation eventually learns the same difficult truth:

Life can change in an instant.

People leave home in the morning and don't make it home that evening.

Someone receives a diagnosis that changes everything.

An accident happens without warning.

A person loses their life because of another person's actions.

Someone goes to sleep expecting to wake up and doesn't.

We don't like thinking about these things, and understandably so.

There used to be a television show called 1000 Ways to Die, and some of the stories were so unbelievable that you almost couldn't believe they were real.

While those situations were often unusual and extreme, there was an unsettling truth underneath the stories:

Life is fragile.

We don't have to live afraid of that fact.

But perhaps we should allow it to make us more grateful.

Because when you realize how quickly circumstances can change, you begin to look at the present differently.

You notice the people sitting around your table.

You appreciate the phone call.

You stop taking the familiar voice for granted.

You notice the laughter of someone you love.

You become more grateful for the body that carried you through another day.

You realize that the person you were annoyed with yesterday is still someone you may be incredibly blessed to have in your life.

Perspective changes everything.

And sometimes the awareness of life's fragility isn't meant to create fear.

It is meant to awaken gratitude.

What If Today Is More Important Than We Realize?

What if we stopped looking at time only as something that is running out?

What if we also looked at it as something God has entrusted to us?

That changes the conversation.

Instead of saying, "I don't have enough time," we might begin asking:

What am I doing with the time I've been given?

That question can be uncomfortable.

But it can also be freeing.

Because you may realize that you don't need to completely change your life.

You may simply need to become more present in it.

Maybe there is someone you need to call.

Maybe there is an apology you've been avoiding.

Maybe there is a dream you've buried because you convinced yourself it was too late.

Maybe there is something God has placed on your heart that you've continued postponing.

Maybe you need to forgive someone—not because what happened was okay, but because you don't want yesterday to keep stealing from today.

Maybe you need to rest.

Yes, rest.

Using your time wisely does not mean filling every minute with productivity.

Rest can be sacred.

Stillness can be sacred.

A quiet cup of coffee can be sacred.

Sitting outside and watching the sky change colors can be sacred.

Laughing with someone you love can be sacred.

The goal isn't to squeeze every possible accomplishment out of your remaining days.

The goal is to actually inhabit the life you've been given.

There is a difference.

🚶 Walking Forward With Intention

So, what do we do with this realization?

We don't panic.

We don't suddenly make reckless decisions because "life is short."

We don't quit everything, spend all our money, and buy a one-way ticket somewhere because we watched one inspirational video at midnight. 😂

Instead, we become intentional.

Start small.

Call someone you love.

Don't wait for a special occasion.

Tell them you love them.

Tell them you appreciate them.

Tell them what they mean to you while they can still hear it.

Pay attention to ordinary moments.

When you're eating dinner, actually taste your food.

When someone is talking to you, put the phone down.

When your child, friend, spouse, parent, or loved one tells you a story you've heard five times, listen to it one more time.

You may not always have another opportunity.

Do something you've been postponing.

Not everything needs to happen immediately, but some things have been sitting on your heart for far too long.

Take the class.

Write the book.

Start the project.

Plant the garden.

Make the phone call.

Go outside.

Begin.

You don't need to know how everything will turn out.

You only need to be willing to take the next faithful step.

Give God some of your time.

Prayer doesn't have to be complicated.

Sometimes it is simply:

"God, thank You for letting me see another day."

That's enough to begin.

Let gratitude become part of your daily rhythm.

Because when we recognize time as a gift from God, we become more conscious of how we use it.

And perhaps that is part of what it means to live with purpose.

💭 A Moment to Sit With God

Before you move on to the rest of your day, pause for a moment.

Take a slow breath.

Let the noise settle.

And ask yourself:

  • If I truly believed tomorrow wasn't promised, what would I do differently today?
  • Who have I been taking for granted?
  • What have I been postponing because I keep assuming there will be more time?
  • Am I actually living my life, or am I constantly waiting for life to begin?
  • Where might God be asking me to become more present?

Don't rush through these questions.

You don't need to have perfect answers.

Maybe one of them makes you uncomfortable.

Maybe one brings someone to mind.

Maybe one makes you realize you've been carrying something that needs to be released.

Take that thought into prayer.

Let God meet you there.

Because sometimes transformation begins with something as simple as becoming honest about where we are.

🙏 Affirmations

I am grateful for the gift of today.

I will be present for the life I have been given.

I will not postpone love, gratitude, or purpose unnecessarily.

I trust God with my future while honoring the present.

I choose to use my time with intention, wisdom, and love.

📖 Bible Verse

"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."
— Psalm 90:12, KJV

I love this verse because it doesn't simply say, "Teach us to number our days so that we can become afraid."

It says wisdom.

There is wisdom in recognizing that our days are limited.

There is wisdom in understanding that tomorrow isn't ours to control.

There is wisdom in realizing that constantly chasing the future can cause us to miss the present.

And there is wisdom in asking God to help us use the time we have in a meaningful way.

To "number our days" isn't about obsessively counting how much time we have left.

It is about recognizing the value of the time we have now.

Every day is an opportunity to love more intentionally.

To forgive more freely.

To pray more honestly.

To serve more faithfully.

To laugh a little louder.

To rest when we need to rest.

To pursue what God has placed within us.

And perhaps most importantly, to stop assuming that ordinary days are insignificant.

They aren't.

Your ordinary Tuesday may be someone's dream.

Your ability to wake up may be something someone else desperately wishes they could experience again.

Your opportunity to hug someone may be something you will one day wish you could do just one more time.

So don't overlook the day simply because it doesn't look extraordinary.

God can place extraordinary meaning inside ordinary moments. 🤍

🎵 Song of the Day

"Time Is..." by DC Talk

🎧 Listen here

Today's Song of the Day is "Time Is..." by DC Talk, and honestly, the message fits this reflection almost perfectly.

The song has an energetic urgency to it. It doesn't approach time as something passive. Instead, it reminds us that the clock is moving whether we're paying attention or not.

One of the central ideas is that the time we've been given is a gift—and a gift is meant to be used.

That doesn't mean we should live frantically.

It means we shouldn't bury our purpose underneath endless procrastination.

We shouldn't keep waiting for the perfect circumstances before we begin living intentionally.

The song also carries a strong spiritual message about having a purpose while we're here. We are not simply passing through our days without meaning. We have opportunities to love people, share hope, serve others, grow spiritually, and make a difference.

And eventually, every one of us will have to leave this physical life.

That truth can sound heavy.

But perhaps it can also make us more awake.

So, listen to the song today.

Let its rhythm remind you that the clock is moving.

Then let that reminder become gratitude rather than fear.

You still have time.

What will you do with it? 🎵

🌼 Final Thoughts

My prayer for you is that you don't wait for a crisis to teach you how precious your life is.

I hope you notice it now.

I hope you appreciate the people who are still here.

I hope you take the picture.

Make the call.

Say "I love you."

Take the walk.

Watch the sunset.

Laugh until your stomach hurts.

Pray when you don't know what else to do.

Rest when your body says enough.

Begin the thing you've been afraid to begin.

And when life doesn't go according to plan, I hope you remember that the value of your life isn't determined by how productive you were today.

You don't have to make every second extraordinary.

You simply have to be present enough to recognize the extraordinary moments hiding inside the ordinary ones.

Time will keep moving.

The clock will continue ticking.

None of us can stop it.

But while you are here, you have the beautiful responsibility—and privilege—of deciding what kind of heart you will carry through the hours you've been given.

So don't wait for tomorrow to appreciate today.

Don't wait for loss to teach you gratitude.

Don't wait for someday to become present.

You opened your eyes today.

You have breath in your lungs.

You are here.

And that means there is still something you can do with this moment.

May God give you wisdom for the days ahead, gratitude for the day you're standing in, courage for the steps you haven't taken yet, and peace about everything you cannot control.

May you recognize the gift of your life—not because you know how many days remain, but because you understand that this day is here.

And this day is worth living.

With love and gratitude,

Angel 🤍
