You Live, You Learn: The Lessons Life Keeps Teaching Us
You Live, You Learn: The Lessons Life Keeps Teaching Us
By Angel, Founder of AMC Rise and
Thrive
🌅 Welcome,
Beautiful Souls
There are some conversations that stay with you long after
everyone has gone home.
Not necessarily because someone said something profound.
Sometimes it is because the conversation makes you think about your own life.
Your younger years.
The things you believed.
The things you thought you understood.
The lessons you had to learn the hard way.
And the things you wish someone could have explained to you
before life decided to explain them for you.
This weekend, I found myself in one of those conversations.
There were four adults talking with my seventeen-year-old
nephew, trying to help him see a little further down the road than he currently
could.
And if I'm being completely honest, part of me had to laugh.
Because I remember being seventeen.
I remember thinking I knew things.
I remember thinking adults didn't understand.
And now here I am, sitting on the other side of the
conversation, realizing that maybe those adults knew a little more than I gave
them credit for. 😂
Isn't that one of life's little ironies?
When you're young, you think adulthood means finally having
all the answers.
Then you become an adult and discover that adulthood is mostly
realizing how many questions you still have.
Life has a funny way of doing that.
It humbles us.
It surprises us.
It changes the plans we were so certain about.
It gives us exactly what we thought we wanted and sometimes
shows us that we didn't want it after all.
It takes us down roads we never intended to travel and somehow
leaves us wiser for having walked them.
And somewhere in the middle of that conversation with my
nephew, I started thinking about one simple truth:
We are always learning.
Every season teaches us something.
Every relationship teaches us something.
Every mistake teaches us something.
Every disappointment, success, heartbreak, blessing, wrong
turn, and unexpected detour has the potential to leave wisdom behind.
The question isn't whether life is teaching us.
The question is:
Are we willing to recognize the lesson? 🌱
💛 Life
Doesn't Come With an Instruction Manual
One of the hardest things about becoming an adult is realizing
that nobody is coming to hand you a complete instruction manual.
Eventually, you have to figure some things out for yourself.
When I was seventeen, my life looked very different from my
nephew's life today.
At that age, I was already living on my own. I was working
full-time, thinking about bills, responsibilities, transportation, food, and
all the ordinary things that come with having to take care of yourself.
That doesn't automatically make my experience better than his.
It simply means my circumstances taught me different
lessons at a different time.
And that distinction matters.
Sometimes we look at younger generations and think, They
don't know what we had to go through.
And sometimes that's true.
They don't.
But here's the thing:
They're not supposed to.
Every generation receives a different classroom.
The lessons may look different, but the need for wisdom
remains the same.
I remember growing up and having conversations with adults
that felt completely different from how I see them now.
Back then, when several adults were talking to us, it could
feel like we were being ganged up on.
Now I understand something I couldn't appreciate then.
Sometimes people are trying to give you wisdom because they
can see the pothole in the road that you haven't noticed yet.
That doesn't mean you're going to listen.
And sometimes you won't.
Because some lessons simply cannot be transferred from one
person to another.
Someone can tell you not to touch the hot stove.
You can believe them.
You can understand the words.
But there is a difference between knowing something
intellectually and knowing it through experience.
That's one of the strange gifts of being human.
We learn from what we're told.
But we also learn from what we live.
And sometimes life has a particularly interesting way of
making sure we remember the lesson.
🌱
Sometimes Life Teaches Us Through Irony
I remember growing up with my cousins, and let me tell you—we
talked some serious trash to each other. 😂
It practically became a competition to see who could hurt the
other person's feelings the most.
Looking back, I can recognize that it wasn't exactly the
healthiest communication style.
But I can also acknowledge that those experiences taught me
something about myself.
They taught me how to develop a thicker skin.
They taught me not to let every opinion become a definition of
who I was.
They taught me that people can say things about you that don't
necessarily make them true.
And perhaps most importantly, they taught me that I don't
have to surrender my peace every time somebody says something I don't like.
That is a lesson worth carrying into adulthood.
Because the world is not always going to handle us gently.
People will misunderstand us.
People will disappoint us.
People will criticize us.
Sometimes people will hurt our feelings without realizing it.
Sometimes they will do it intentionally.
And there will be moments when we have to decide:
What am I going to do with this?
Life can be ironic that way.
The very thing we thought would destroy us may teach us
resilience.
The person we thought we couldn't live without may teach us
how to stand on our own.
The opportunity we thought we missed may lead us somewhere
better.
The advice we refused to take may become the wisdom we
eventually wish we had followed.
And sometimes we spend years trying to avoid something only to
discover that the experience we feared was actually part of our growth.
That doesn't mean every painful experience was sent by God.
It doesn't mean everything that happens is secretly a
blessing.
Some things are simply painful.
Some things are unfair.
Some things should never have happened.
But even when life gives us something we never wanted, we
still get to decide what we do with what remains.
We can heal.
We can learn.
We can grow.
We can become wiser.
A weak mind isn't necessarily a mind that has been hurt.
A mind becomes stronger when it learns how to process what
happened without allowing the experience to dictate its entire future.
That's strength.
Learning how to think.
Learning how to discern.
Learning when to speak.
Learning when to walk away.
Learning when criticism contains wisdom and when it is simply
somebody else's projection.
Learning that your worth cannot depend on everybody else's
approval.
Because if you constantly live according to what other people
think about you, you eventually hand them the keys to your happiness.
And that is a very expensive price to pay for acceptance.
🌿 What I
Was Really Trying to Tell Him
As I sat there talking to my nephew, I realized I wasn't
really trying to tell him how to live his entire life.
I was trying to prepare him for responsibility.
He is standing at a threshold.
Soon, more and more decisions will belong to him.
What kind of life does he want?
What does he want to pursue?
How will he support himself?
Who will he surround himself with?
What kind of person does he want to become?
Those questions can feel overwhelming when you're seventeen.
And honestly?
They can still feel overwhelming when you're forty-something. 😂
I told him something that may sound harsh at first:
The world isn't going to stop because you're
having a bad day.
Life will continue moving.
Bills will still arrive.
Responsibilities will still exist.
You may not feel motivated.
You may feel hurt.
You may feel confused.
You may wish someone else would step in and fix everything.
But eventually, there comes a point where you have to learn
how to take responsibility for your own life.
That doesn't mean you never need help.
Please hear that.
Self-reliance is not the same thing as isolation. (https://amcriseandthrive.blogspot.com/2026/02/the-difference-between-solitude-and.html
)
We all need people.
We need family.
We need friends.
We need community.
We need people who will pray with us, encourage us, correct
us, and sometimes simply sit beside us when life gets heavy.
But there is a difference between receiving help and
waiting for someone to rescue you.
I learned that lesson early.
My mother used to tell me that I could do anything I wanted in
this world as long as it didn't inconvenience someone else.
Time.
Money.
Energy.
Planning.
Responsibility.
If I wanted something, I had to figure out how to make it
happen.
That probably explains a lot about why I became so
self-reliant.
I didn't grow up expecting someone to simply hand me
everything I wanted.
I learned to figure things out.
And yes, sometimes that was hard.
Adulting is hard.
Nobody puts that on the brochure. 😂
But here's the irony.
When I was younger, I probably didn't appreciate how much
those lessons were shaping me.
I simply knew I had responsibilities.
I didn't realize I was also developing independence,
resilience, problem-solving skills, and confidence.
Sometimes you don't recognize the lesson while you're living
it.
You recognize it later.
✨ There Is
Nothing Wrong With Wanting More
I have certain things I consider necessities in my life.
Electricity.
Internet.
Food.
Indoor plumbing.
Transportation.
Freedom.
A safe place to sleep.
Those are my requirements.
Someone else may have a completely different list.
And that's okay.
But here's the lesson underneath it:
If you want something, you have to be willing to
participate in creating the life that can sustain it.
Dreams require participation.
Goals require effort.
Freedom requires responsibility.
Growth requires discomfort.
And sometimes the life we say we want requires us to become
someone who is capable of carrying it.
That last part is important.
We often pray for the blessing without asking whether we're
prepared for the responsibility attached to it.
We ask God for more money.
But can we manage it wisely?
We ask for a healthy relationship.
But are we willing to communicate honestly?
We ask for a new opportunity.
But are we willing to show up consistently?
We ask for purpose.
But are we willing to be disciplined?
Sometimes God isn't withholding the thing we want.
Sometimes He is developing the person who will receive it.
And development takes time.
Sometimes it takes experiences we wouldn't have chosen.
Sometimes it takes closed doors.
Sometimes it takes realizing that our original plan wasn't
actually the best plan.
And sometimes it takes a little irony.
Because we can spend so much time trying to control exactly
how our lives unfold that we forget something important:
We don't actually know everything that's coming.
🙏 What If
Life Has Been Teaching You All Along?
This is where I think we sometimes miss the beauty of our
experiences.
We look at something painful and call it wasted time.
We look at a failed relationship and call it a mistake.
We look at a career that didn't work out and call it failure.
We look at a season of struggle and ask God, Why did I have
to go through that?
But what if we asked a different question?
What did that season teach me?
What did heartbreak teach you about your heart?
What did disappointment teach you about expectations?
What did failure teach you about perseverance?
What did loneliness teach you about yourself?
What did success teach you about responsibility?
What did losing something teach you about gratitude?
What did waiting teach you about patience?
What did being misunderstood teach you about identity?
What did surviving teach you about strength?
Maybe the experience wasn't meaningless.
Maybe there was wisdom hidden inside it.
Life can be funny like that.
Sometimes we don't get the thing we wanted because something
else was being prepared.
Sometimes we get exactly what we wanted and discover it wasn't
what we needed.
Sometimes we spend years avoiding a lesson only to encounter
it again in a different form.
Sometimes the answer arrives late.
Sometimes the opportunity comes when we're finally ready.
Sometimes we look back and realize that what felt like a
detour was actually part of the road.
And sometimes we simply have to laugh and say:
"Well... I certainly didn't see that
coming." 😂
That's life.
We make plans.
God sees possibilities we cannot.
We see one chapter.
He sees the whole story.
That doesn't mean we should sit back and do nothing.
It means we can make our plans while remaining humble enough
to adjust when life changes them.
🚶 Walking
Forward With What You Know Now
So, what do we do with all of this?
We keep learning.
We stop expecting ourselves to know everything.
We stop being ashamed of mistakes that taught us something.
And we stop assuming that getting something wrong means we are
a failure.
Sometimes you made the best decision you could with the
information you had at the time.
Now you know more.
So, make a different decision.
That's growth.
You don't have to become perfect.
You just have to become more aware.
Before making your next decision, ask yourself:
What has my past already taught me about this?
What patterns keep showing up?
What am I ignoring?
What do I already know but don't want to admit?
Where am I being stubborn because I want my way?
Where might God be asking me to grow?
And perhaps the biggest question:
Am I willing to learn something new?
Because wisdom requires humility.
You cannot learn if you already believe you know everything.
Sometimes the next chapter of your life requires you to admit:
"I don't know yet."
And there is tremendous freedom in those words.
You don't know yet.
That's okay.
You can learn.
You can ask.
You can listen.
You can pray.
You can try again.
You can make a better choice tomorrow.
One faithful step at a time. 🤍
❤️ A
Moment to Sit With Yourself
Before you move on with your day, take a quiet moment.
You don't need to solve your entire life tonight.
Just sit with these questions.
1. What is
something life has taught me that I could not have learned any other way?
2. Is there
a lesson I keep encountering because I haven't fully learned it yet?
3. Where
have I allowed someone else's opinion to have too much power over my peace?
4. What
responsibility do I need to take ownership of instead of waiting for someone
else to handle it?
5. What
might God be developing in me during this current season?
Take those questions into prayer.
You may be surprised by what rises to the surface.
Sometimes wisdom doesn't arrive as a lightning bolt.
Sometimes it arrives quietly.
A realization.
A memory.
A moment of conviction.
A deep breath.
A simple:
"Oh... now I understand."
Pay attention to those moments.
They may be part of the lesson.
🙏

📖
Scripture Reflection
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get
wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”
— Proverbs 4:7 (KJV)
I love how direct this verse is.
Get wisdom.
Not just information.
Not just knowledge.
Wisdom.
Because knowing something and knowing what to do with what you
know are two very different things.
You can know that something is unhealthy and still keep
choosing it.
You can know that a decision isn't wise and still make it.
You can know what God is asking of you and still hesitate.
Wisdom is where knowledge begins to become action.
It is learning from experience and allowing that knowledge to
shape the way you move forward.
So don't waste what you have lived through.
Ask God to give you understanding.
Ask Him to help you recognize the lessons.
Ask Him to soften the places where you have become stubborn
and strengthen the places where you have become weary.
And then walk forward with what you've learned.
🎵 Song of
the Day
“Ironic” by Alanis Morissette
When I started thinking about today's message and realized I
had already used “You Learn,” I knew I needed another song that could
speak to the same idea from a different angle.
And then it hit me:
“Ironic.”
Because if there is one thing life knows how to do, it is
surprise us.
The song walks through a series of situations where life
doesn't unfold the way we expect.
Someone finally receives something they've been waiting for,
only for circumstances to change.
Someone plays it safe for years and discovers that safety
didn't guarantee the outcome they imagined.
Someone receives good advice but doesn't take it.
A person encounters exactly the kind of timing that makes you
stop and say, Seriously? Right now? 😂
And beneath all those scenarios is something that fits today's
message beautifully:
Life doesn't always teach us in the order we would
prefer.
Sometimes the lesson comes before we're ready.
Sometimes it comes afterward, when we're looking back.
Sometimes we ignore good advice because we think we know
better.
Sometimes we don't understand the significance of a moment
until years later.
And sometimes life simply reminds us that we are not in
control of every outcome.
That's where I think the song connects with the conversation I
had with my nephew.
Those of us who have been around longer have a tendency to
say, “Listen to me. I already learned this lesson.”
And sometimes we are absolutely right.
But the younger person may still need to experience enough of
life to understand why the advice mattered.
That's not necessarily rebellion.
Sometimes it's simply being human.
We all have lessons we had to learn for ourselves.
I know I do.
There are things people told me that I didn't fully understand
until life handed me the receipt.
And when it did, I had to laugh.
"Okay, God. I see what You were trying to
show me now." 😂
That's the beauty of hindsight.
We can't always recognize the lesson while we're standing
inside the situation.
But later, we can look back and see the connections.
We can see how one experience prepared us for another.
We can see how a disappointment redirected us.
We can see how a mistake gave us wisdom.
We can see how something that once felt like the worst
possible timing eventually became part of our story.
So, when you listen to “Ironic,” don't just listen for
the humor or the unexpected situations.
Listen for the reminder that life is unpredictable.
And perhaps more importantly, listen for the invitation to stay
flexible, stay humble, and keep learning.
Because sometimes the greatest wisdom isn't knowing exactly
what will happen.
It's knowing that whatever happens, you can meet it with
faith, discernment, and the willingness to grow. 🎵
🌼 Final
Thoughts
Maybe you're in the middle of a lesson right now.
Maybe you're wondering why something happened.
Maybe you're frustrated because you thought you were further
along.
Maybe you're looking back at choices you wish you could
change.
Be gentle with yourself.
You are still learning.
And so am I.
None of us arrived here knowing everything.
We are gathering wisdom as we go.
Some lessons come through joy.
Some come through tears.
Some come through people.
Some come through endings.
Some come through doors opening when we least expect them.
And some arrive through circumstances so unexpected that all
we can do is shake our heads and laugh.
That's life.
We make plans.
We make choices.
We try to protect ourselves.
We listen to advice—or sometimes ignore it.
We think we know where we're going.
And then life reminds us that there is still more to learn.
So don't despise your journey.
Don't throw away the wisdom simply because you didn't like the
experience that delivered it.
Take what is useful.
Heal what hurt.
Release what no longer belongs to you.
Thank God for what grew in you.
And keep walking.
Because maybe the point isn't to reach a place where you never
make another mistake.
Maybe the point is to become wise enough to recognize what
each experience is trying to teach you.
You live.
You love.
You lose.
You laugh.
You grieve.
You choose.
You pray.
And through it all...
you learn. 🌱
Sometimes life will be beautiful.
Sometimes it will be confusing.
Sometimes it will be wonderfully unexpected.
Sometimes it will be so ironic that all you can do is laugh.
But through every season, God is still able to meet you there.
May God give you wisdom for the road ahead, grace for the
lessons behind you, and discernment for the decisions waiting in front of you.
May you never become so convinced that you know everything
that you stop being willing to learn.
And may you trust that even when the lesson is difficult, God
can still use your experiences to shape you into the person you are becoming.
Keep your heart open.
Keep your spirit teachable.
Keep moving forward.
There is still so much life left to learn.
With love and gratitude,
Angel 🤍
